Variety description

10 August 2026

The Mezzano group varieties were created in the mid-20th century through the introgression of genes from the wild sea beet Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima. This genetic heritage was widely used by breeders to create Cercospora-resistant hybrids. Historically, the root crops were described as having a tendency toward a cylindrical shape and fibrousness.

The variety was characterized by a high sucrose content with relatively low root yield compared to modern analogues. Typical features of early breeding forms included a tendency toward early bolting and a branched fruit shape. The monogen suffix in the name denotes monogermity, which eliminates the need for crop thinning.

Today, Mezzano is not a commercial variety for mass production and is considered historical genetic material.
