The variety was bred in the first half of the 20th century at a research institute in Rovigo by crossing sugar beet with wild sea beet. It was initially intended for use as genetic material for breeding disease-resistant forms.

Plants of the Mezzano group are distinguished by high resistance to Cercospora leaf spot and a significant sucrose content. Early specimens were characterized by a cylindrical root shape, a tendency to lignification, and lower yield compared to commercial varieties of that time.
