US1 is a classic source material that played a key role in genetic research, specifically in studies on self-sterility mechanisms and trait inheritance. The variety is characterized as having resistance to curly top.

Along with the variety US33, US1 was used as a genetic base for creating male-sterile forms of monogerm sugar beet. Most modern hybrids of the crop trace back to the genetic material of these historical lines.
