The variety is mentioned in international catalogs as a Brassica napus variety, however, in a number of documents it appears in the context of rutabaga or local Italian breeding forms. Its origin is linked to the Leonessa plateau in the province of Rieti, where the variety developed for a long time under highland conditions at an altitude of about 1000 meters above sea level.
Publications from the 1970s noted high productivity rates for the variety at that time. Historically, Leonessa was used as an oilseed crop and a traditional food product. At present, detailed data on modern morphological traits, maturity group, and disease resistance are absent in open sources.
