The variety belongs to the category of semi-dwarf hybrids, which provides it with high lodging resistance due to the presence of the dwarfing gene. Regarding its usage type, the variety is double-low, characterized by a low content of erucic acid and glucosinolates.

Lutin became one of the first commercial hybrids to implement a combination of the Ogu-INRA cytoplasmic male sterility system with genetic traits for plant height control.
