The Av-Opal genotype is known for its ability to release bioactive compounds that suppress the growth of weeds, such as rigid ryegrass. In breeding programs, this genotype is used to develop varieties with an increased ability to suppress weed vegetation.

Morphologically, Av-Opal is characterized as a less vigorous type with a shorter stem height compared to other genotypes. Studies have shown a lack of pronounced resistance of this genotype to turnip yellows virus.
