Verde calabrese is a traditional Italian broccoli population, which is considered an ancestral type. This variety type is often used as source material for breeding modern hybrids. Within the population, forms with different maturity periods from early to late are distinguished.

The plants are characterized by high branching and narrow leaves that do not wrap around the inflorescence. Compared to modern F1 hybrids, this type has a smaller head size, significant genetic variability, and specific organoleptic properties. The crop is mainly used for personal consumption and the preservation of biodiversity.
