The variety is an ancient local landrace that historically developed in the Trás-os-Montes region. The plant is characterized by large size, thick stems, and large dark green rounded or elliptical leaves with pronounced white veins.
The plant does not form a classic dense head, although a loose cluster of leaves may develop in the center. The variety is considered hardy and resistant to frosts down to -8°C, which positively affect the texture of the leaves, making them less tough.
It is used primarily in cooking, serving as a traditional ingredient in Portuguese soups and winter stews. Scientific studies have investigated the genetic resistance of the variety to a number of cruciferous pathogens, including the causal agents of downy mildew.
