The variety originates from the Piedmont region and is a landrace that has undergone many years of selection. The selected version, Carmagnola Selezionata (CS), was developed at the beginning of the 20th century to improve fiber characteristics. The plant is characterized by a late maturity group with a vegetative cycle of 160 to 190 days.

The original version reaches a height of over 6 meters, while the selected CS reaches 4.5–5.5 meters. The variety is hardy and adapted to various climatic conditions in Europe. When cultivated, the biomass yield is 10–15 tons per hectare, and seed yield is 400–600 kg/ha.

The variety's fiber is notable for its strength and flexibility, which is valued in the textile industry. The THC content in the plant is maintained at a low level according to EU standards, while the CBD level varies within the range of 3–10%.
