Manzano pepper (from Spanish — "apple tree") is a species of Capsicum pubescens. Plants of this species possess cold hardiness and are adapted to high-altitude conditions. Characteristic morphological traits are pubescent leaves, purple flowers, and black seeds. The vegetation period is long; the plants can be cultivated as perennials.
In commercial catalogs, a variety of the species Capsicum chinense may be encountered under the name Habanero Manzano. This is a hot pepper reaching 350,000 SHU, which is a variant of the Habanero Orange variety and is not related to Capsicum pubescens.
