The variety is a local cultivar historically formed in the Galicia region. It possesses a high degree of variability in morphological traits, including weight, color, shape, and pericarp thickness. Phenotypically, the fruits belong to the "square-pointed" category.
Unlike some other local varieties of the region, pungency has not been recorded as an inherent trait for Punxin. The variety is of interest for the preservation of genetic diversity and for breeding work within the framework of sustainable agriculture.
