Carolina Strongback is a rootstock belonging to the species Citrullus amarus. The plant is used exclusively in agricultural technology for grafting Citrullus lanatus watermelon cultivars, providing resistance to Fusarium wilt (races 1 and 2), southern root-knot and reniform nematodes, as well as bacterial fruit blotch.
The plant exhibits vigorous growth, a thick hypocotyl, and ensures a high grafting success rate (90–100%). Use of the rootstock may cause a delay in the flowering of female scion flowers, which sometimes leads to a shift in crop maturity dates. The fruits of the rootstock itself are not intended for human consumption due to mediocre flavor qualities.
