The variety is a local Italian landrace, historically grown in the Po Valley. The plant is creeping; the fruits are round or oval in shape, reaching about 20 cm in diameter. The rind is yellow-green with light spots, stripes, and a pronounced waxy bloom.

The fruits are not consumed fresh due to the unsweetened whitish flesh; they are traditionally used for making mostarda, jam, or marmalade. Due to its resistance to Cucurbitaceae pathogens, the variety is widely used as a rootstock for commercial watermelon varieties.
