The tree reaches a height of 2.5 to 6 meters in open field, has a dense crown with drooping branches and lanceolate dark green leaves. The plant's shoots are practically devoid of thorns. The Bearss variety is one of the most well-known commercial forms of this species.
The fruits are medium-sized, about 6 cm in diameter, have a smooth firm rind and often a small nipple at the apex. When harvested, they are green in color, and upon full ripening on the tree, they turn yellow. The plant is capable of bearing fruit year-round, with flowering peaks in late winter and early spring.
This species is more cold-hardy and resilient compared to the Key lime. The fruits are distinguished by the absence of seeds, lower acidity, and lack of bitterness. The crop is sensitive to excess moisture in the soil, therefore it requires the provision of high-quality drainage.
