The variety is a traditional local landrace from northern Italy. It has become the subject of research projects aimed at preserving and standardizing its characteristics through participatory plant breeding.
The winter-maturing fruits are characterized by a segmented, bumpy shape. The flesh is dense, sweet, often with a nutty flavor, and is distinguished by a high content of dry matter, sucrose, vitamin C, and carotenoids.
The pumpkin has high keeping quality and is capable of being stored for 6–8 months without loss of properties. It is used in cooking for baking, preparing purees, soups, and porridges. This variety should be distinguished from another Italian variety — Berrettina Piacentina.
