The plant is a vigorous vine with long runners of up to 5–10 meters and leaves resembling the shape of fig leaves. The fruits have a round or oval shape, hard rind with a dark reticulated pattern similar to watermelon coloring, and black seeds.
The crop is distinguished by high disease resistance, the ability to withstand cool conditions, and exceptional keeping quality of the fruits, which can be stored for up to several years. When boiled, the flesh breaks down into long transparent fibers, which determines its culinary purpose for preparing jam.
