The Harkstead Red variety is an intergeneric hybrid resulting from the crossing of Digitalis purpurea and Isoplexis canariensis (synonym Digitalis canariensis). The plant is a perennial adapted for cultivation in hardiness zone 8 and above.
Due to its sterility, the plant does not expend resources on seed formation, which stimulates the production of new flower stalks from side shoots and ensures a long flowering period. The variety forms strong flower stalks and is intended for use in flower beds, gardens, and containers.
In commercial catalogs, this variety is often associated with the name Illumination Raspberry. The plant possesses ornamental properties and attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
