The variety is a short-lived herbaceous perennial, often grown as a biennial. The plant forms a compact, upright, densely branched bush reaching a height of 10 to 50 cm. The foliage is narrow and dark green.

Flowering continues from spring to the end of summer. The flowers are large, fragrant, and change color: fresh ones have a rich orange color, which becomes mauve-purple as they age. The plant prefers sunny locations and well-drained soils, and attracts pollinators.
