The variety was obtained as a result of a controlled cross of parent forms, one of which is the variety San Juan. The plant was selected in Monterey County, California.
The variety is used as a reference for comparison when describing other breeding lines. It also appeared in scientific studies comparing fruit quality and soil characteristics on organic and conventional fields in 2004–2005.
This variety is not intended for free distribution among amateur gardeners and is grown exclusively by independent farmers working under a license agreement.
