The variety Vermilion is the result of hybridization carried out in 1941 in Urbana, Illinois. The variety was officially introduced by the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station in April 1950.
The variety was recommended for cultivation in specific regions of the USA, in particular, in southern Illinois. In agronomic literature, it is mentioned as one of the varieties used by breeders to work on improving the productivity and resistance of the crop.
