The Etna variety is used in professional breeding as a genetic component (parental form) for the creation of new strawberry varieties, such as Malling Opal, Malling Pearl, and L'Amour. Studies confirm the variety's high productivity and its ability to adapt to various climatic conditions.

Morphological traits of the variety include a large leaf blade. In laboratory and field trials, the fruits of the variety demonstrate increased titratable acidity compared to a number of other varieties. There are also local types of strawberries grown on the volcanic soils of Sicily, which may be referred to under the general name Etna.
