The cultivar belongs to the high gland (HG) type, which ensures the presence of gossypol throughout the calyx. This feature provides improved resistance to pests such as the tobacco budworm Heliothis virescens and the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa zea. The cultivar has also been used in studies of resistance to bacterial blight.

H1220 is a breeding line with normal gossypol content in the seeds. It is frequently used as a control sample for comparative trials of yield, seed composition, and fiber quality, and also serves as a base for developing transgenic modifications resistant to herbicides and pests.
