The variety belongs to the Papilio/Cybister line and is a hybrid, not a pure H. cybister form. The plant has a characteristic trifid stigma, while the original species has a trilobed stigma. Origin is presumed to be through crossing H. cybister with a deep red hybrid of a similar species.

The flowers have narrow, strongly wavy petals. Visually, the variety resembles a vigorous version of H. cybister with more intense coloration and expanded perianth segments. The plant possesses high decorative value, especially when multiple scapes bloom simultaneously, and is used as genetic material in breeding.
