The variety is a six-row spring barley cultivar. During agricultural trials conducted primarily in the state of Idaho, it was used to compare growth rates and plant height with varieties such as Steptoe and Gustoe.
The quality characteristics of Columbia grain were distinguished by a higher protein content compared to the Gustoe variety. This barley was also used in studies of cereal crop resistance to diseases and pests, including nematodes, in the Pacific Northwest region of the USA.
