The Gaute variety belongs to the group of early-maturing six-row barleys. It was included in breeding programs focused on increasing yield and adaptation to the northern climate of Norway and Finland.
The plant possesses resistance to leaf spot caused by Ramularia collo-cygni. Breeding of the variety was conducted taking into account such qualities as lodging resistance, resistance to sprouting in the ear, and general suitability for mechanized harvesting under difficult weather conditions.
