The variety is a spring barley with a genetic pedigree of (Armelle x Lud) x Luke. During its period of active use in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the variety was characterized as having high malting quality.
The plant exhibited resistance to Rhynchosporium and moderate susceptibility to powdery mildew. In scientific studies, the variety demonstrated signs of slow leaf rust development, and the level of Fusarium head blight infection was comparable to resistant lines of that period.
The Koru variety is widely known in agronomic science because its ear primordium morphogenesis was used to create a quantitative scale for barley development from germination to pollination, known as the Waddington scale.
