The variety belongs to the category of six-row barleys. During the 1970s, it was considered one of the most high-yielding varieties of its time. The breeding of the variety was aimed at increasing resistance to lodging, which was a key productivity factor for cereal crops of that era.

Traditionally, this variety was used in agriculture as a feed crop. Due to its genetic characteristics, Maguelone was also used in breeding programs, where it served as a component for forming the pedigrees of new barley varieties.
