The variety is a winter six-row barley that was widely cultivated in the southern regions of the USA during the 1960s and 1970s. In terms of maturity, this variety is classified as early-maturing.
During agronomic trials in the 1970s, the variety's susceptibility to barley yellow dwarf virus, which affected productivity, was noted. Despite the lack of precise data on plant height, MCNAIR 601 was actively used as a parent form in breeding programs, in particular for the development of the Price variety.
