These breeding lines were obtained by researchers to utilize the brittle rachis gene of wild barley. The objective was to develop forms capable of self-seeding in the arid conditions of the Mediterranean, which allows them to be used to create sustainable pastures without the need for annual reseeding.
The resulting populations possess high forage characteristics, including a crude protein content of approximately 18% and high organic matter digestibility at the 80% level. The biological features of the forms, including brittle rachis, facilitate natural shattering and seed dispersal.
