PIGGY barley is a lys3a-type mutant developed for research purposes to increase the nutritional value of the grain. The main purpose of the line was its use as a protein source with a high content of lysine and threonine for animal husbandry, which allowed for the optimization of swine diets.

The main feature of the line is an increased content of essential amino acids while simultaneously reducing the amount of starch. Scientific papers note the low yield of the crop, as protein accumulation occurs to the detriment of grain weight. Information on the morphological parameters of the plant or its resistance to diseases in publications is limited.
