The variety is the result of crossing the Hankkija-673 and Hiproly varieties. The plant does not belong to the early-maturing category and matures four days later than the parent variety Hankkija-673. The barley possesses good straw stiffness and high tillering, inherited from two-row ancestors.
The protein content in the grain is average, and the protein quality is at a standard level. The variety was tested for suitability for brewing. In comparison with more susceptible varieties, Pohto exhibits resistance to net blotch. The variety was used in commercial production and scientific research on feed quality.
