The variety is a winter two-row form of barley. Its origin is based on a combination of parental lines Clara, Ludo, and Rafiki.
The plant has medium heading and maturity dates, as well as a medium stem height. The variety exhibits a differentiated level of resistance to a complex of pathogens, including powdery mildew, net blotch, and rust.
Grain quality of this variety was studied within the framework of analyzing enzymatic activity and hordein protein composition. Zephyr is also used in breeding work as a parental form for developing new barley varieties.
