The Colt rootstock is a product of crossing Prunus avium and Prunus pseudocerasus. Trees on this rootstock reach 60–70% of the size of trees on vigorous seedling rootstocks and enter into fruiting earlier. The rootstock provides good anchorage, but due to a shallow root system, it is sensitive to drought.
The plant adapts well to moist and heavy soils, possesses resistance to bacterial canker, Phytophthora root rot, and rodent damage, but is sensitive to bacterial root burn. The rootstock is compatible with most commercial varieties, is easily propagated by cuttings, and produces few suckers.
