Variety description

10 August 2026

Gisela 5 (Gi 148/2) is a hybrid of Prunus cerasus and Prunus canescens. The rootstock is used for establishing intensive orchards with high planting density, limiting tree growth to approximately 50% of standard seedling rootstocks, which allows the crown height to be maintained at about 2.5 meters.

Plants grafted onto this rootstock enter into fruiting in the 2–3 year after planting and are characterized by high productivity. The rootstock does not produce root suckers and possesses tolerance to common stone fruit viruses, although it is demanding regarding soil fertility and moisture supply.

Due to its dwarfing growth habit and high yield, the trees require mandatory support installation. In intensive orchard conditions, regular formative pruning, crop thinning, and timely fertilization are necessary to maintain fruit quality and size.
