The plant is a compact, dense shrub ranging in height from 90 cm to 1.5 m. The leaves are dark green, oval-shaped, and glossy, reaching 20 cm in length. Strong shoots are capable of supporting large inflorescences.

The inflorescence type is spherical. During the period from July to September, the flower color changes from greenish to white and then to a pink or mauve range depending on soil acidity. Flowering occurs on previous year's growth. Winter hardiness corresponds to USDA zone 6 (down to −23.3 °C).

The variety is suitable for open field cultivation in borders or group plantings, as well as in containers. Strong stems allow the inflorescences to be used for cutting. There is a variegated variety named Ankong Character.
