The variety is a local Moldovan selection, selected as a result of activities to search for and develop valuable forms of walnut. The name of the variety comes from its place of origin — Kostiuzheny.

Kostiuzhenskyi is characterized by its adaptation to the climatic conditions of Moldova and adjacent regions. The variety is officially recognized and widely mentioned in the professional community alongside other Moldovan varieties.
