The plant has an upright silhouette with relatively sparse foliage, which sometimes has a purple tint. During the active growth phase, the height is about 25 cm; during flowering, flower stalks can reach 100 cm. The stems taste like asparagus or fresh cucumber.
The variety has a vegetation period 2–3 weeks longer than regular leaf lettuces. Stems are harvested before flowering begins, as they may become bitter once the flower stalk is produced. Young leaves are also edible.
Cultivation requires a sunny location and humus-rich soil. The recommended spacing between plants is 25–30 cm with a sowing depth of 1 cm. The crop can be grown both by transplanting and by direct seeding into the soil.
