The variety is a fast-growing plant with green leaves that may have a slight reddish tint. It forms a medium-sized head.
Traditionally, the variety is grown in protected cultivation, including unheated greenhouses, and is also used for overwintering and autumn-winter cultivation. When grown during warm summer weather, the leaves may develop a bitter taste.
The variety has a long history of use in phytopathological studies, in particular for studying resistance to downy mildew (Bremia lactucae).
