The Grasslands Ruanui variety was formed through the selection and improvement of an ecotype from the Hawke's Bay region, which had adapted to intensive sheep grazing conditions. The plant is characterized by a dense, leafy growth habit with active tillering, although specific morphological markers for its identification are weakly expressed.

This variety has historically been used as a control sample when evaluating the productivity and persistence of other ryegrasses. It is intended for the establishment of permanent pastures in temperate climates and tolerates grazing well, although it is inferior to modern varieties in winter growth rate and resistance to rust.
