The Serenity variety was obtained as a result of selective breeding from the progeny of a single plant selected in a commercial field of the Reatta variety. Mass phenotypic selection and crossing were carried out over three generations to achieve uniformity, distinctness, and stability of traits.

The plant is intended for use as a lawn grass. The variety possesses high turf density, improved color and texture ratings, as well as a low growth habit. It is adapted to the conditions of Western Oregon, is drought tolerant, and is suitable for low mowing.
