The Harlequin variety is a climbing vine with ovate or elliptic green leaves featuring an irregular cream-white margin, which often acquires a pinkish hue. The plant reaches a height of 3–4 meters, although in some cases the dimensions may vary from 3 to 9 meters.
The flowers are tubular, two-lipped, gathered in inflorescences at the ends of the shoots, and possess a strong fragrance. The flower color is cream-white with pink or purple shades; they may be light upon opening and subsequently turn yellow. Flowering begins in early summer and may repeat throughout the season.
The plant belongs to USDA hardiness zones 4–9. The variety requires a support for vertical growth, but in the absence of one, it can be used as a groundcover plant. By autumn, red berries ripen, which serve as food for birds.
