The variety belongs to the bitter lupin group, contains alkaloids, and does not have a determinate growth type. The plant is characterized as tall and resistant to lodging. Due to its deeply penetrating root system, the variety effectively loosens compacted soil layers.
Lupin Azuro is a nitrogen fixer and is used for green manure. The high alkaloid content makes it less susceptible to being eaten by wild animals and birds. The variety is adapted to light and medium soils with a pH level from 5.0 to 6.5 and is less sensitive to lime.
For cultivation, the recommended seeding rate is 160–180 kg/ha, and seed sowing depth is from 2 to 4 cm (up to 6 cm). In European practice, sowing dates fall within the period from June to the end of July.
