The plant is an annual summer stock that forms spike-shaped inflorescences. The flowers have a strong fragrance and can be either single or double.

Successful cultivation requires sunny sites with nutritious, humus-rich, and sufficiently moist soil. When growing seedlings, two-stage pricking out is recommended.

There is a method for selecting double forms: after pricking out, the temperature is lowered to 8°C, which allows the seedlings to be distinguished by the color of their cotyledons: light green seedlings produce double flowers, dark green ones produce single flowers.
