The variety belongs to the category of type A long-grain rice with crystalline grain. It is classified as mid-early in terms of maturity.

It is distinguished by high resistance to the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae (blast) and stability against lodging. It shows good adaptation to the soil and climatic conditions of Portugal.

Rice of the «Carolino» type is characterized by a high starch content; it absorbs flavors and aromas well while maintaining grain integrity after cooking. It is used in traditional Portuguese dishes, including rice with seafood, tomatoes, and soups.
