The Dion variety belongs to the japonica type. Its breeding and development are associated with the work of the Cereal Institute in Thessaloniki, which has been conducting research on rice since 1958. The variety is used in commercial production in the Thessaloniki, Serres, and Phthiotis regions.

In scientific literature, the variety often serves as a model subject for studying agrotechnical parameters, such as tillering or plant nutrient uptake. Precise data on plant height and disease resistance are absent, and physiological maturity under field conditions occurs by the beginning of October.
