The Melange variety belongs to the species Phaseolus coccineus and is a local landrace known in Austria as part of the Steirische Käferbohne group. The plant is a climbing form.
The seeds of the variety are large, kidney-shaped, with a thousand kernel weight of at least 1200 grams. Their color varies from purple-black to brown-beige, with the base color classified as light brown. The seeds have a variegated or marbled pattern.
The variety is used for the production of mature dry grain. During culinary processing, the beans increase in size and weight, and their color changes to a brown shade.
