The variety is associated with the Kastoria region in Greece, where the cultivated Phaseolus coccineus bean has the status of a protected geographical indication. The plant is characterized by a thin, flexible twining stem and compound leaves consisting of three leaflets.
The flowers are gathered in large axillary inflorescences, blooming sequentially from the base to the apex. The fruits (pods) have a white kidney shape and are distinguished by their large size. The species is cross-pollinating and capable of symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
