The variety is a climbing plant of the species Phaseolus coccineus. A distinctive feature of its appearance is pods with purple stripes, which can turn completely dark purple in cool weather at the end of the season.
The plant demonstrates good heat and drought tolerance in comparison with other varieties. In a number of European catalogs and official lists, the Yardstick variety may be listed as a synonym for the Achievement variety.
