The variety belongs to the wrinkled seed type, carrying the recessive gene r in a homozygous state. The seeds have green cotyledons; the produce is characterized by high sugar content and a low level of alcohol-insoluble solids.

During variety testing, the variety was classified as slightly susceptible to downy mildew. Darfon is widely used as a reference variety in international guidelines, where it serves as a benchmark for determining the expression of morphological characteristics of other samples.
