Variety description

10 August 2026

Massey Gem, also known as Melbourne Market, is an early-maturing dwarf shelling pea with a height of 40–75 cm. The variety matures in about 65 days, forms 9 cm long pods with 8 seeds, is resistant to powdery mildew, and is suitable for spring and autumn sowing.

Sweet Gem is a sugar pea with a semi-vining growth type up to 120 cm, requiring trellising. The variety is early-maturing, ripening in 63–65 days, possesses resistance to powdery mildew, and produces sweet, crunchy pods suitable for eating whole.

The name Gem has historically been used since the 19th century to denote various types of early-maturing dwarf peas, including forms such as McLean's Little Gem or Beck Gem, which were often used in breeding as parental lines.
